Parents who experience poverty and want to provide their children with an escape route can be expected encourage support progeny’s education. The evidence that Roma parents behave differently is unsettling. In this paper we test empirically explanation for behavior. based on a theory (Stark et al. 2018) “borrowed” rationalize the enforcement of norms little formal education in underprivileged communities. An analysis survey data collected communities four Central Eastern European countries lends explanation. reveals strong negative correlation between influence community individual member’s life importance accorded by schooling children. robust controlling standard determinants attitudes towards schooling, such as poverty, unemployment, labor market discrimination, parents’ educational attainment. suggests policy interventions aiming increase need reckon choices.
